Farm Use: Seed catalogues

We're Deirdre and Phil Armstrong of Harvest Thyme Herbs, a small, diversified 6- acre farm nestled in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Here we grow our herbs and vegetables for discriminating chefs and gourmet markets in Staunton and Charlottesville. These chefs and small business owners have made a commitment to source their foods from small local growers such as ourselves. We feel privileged to grow for them. An overflowing basket of seed catalogues sits in our basement, with well- thumbed pages and multi-colored stickers highlighting the herbs and vegetables we are planning to grow this year for our restaurant accounts. Inspired by meals we've enjoyed from our chefs, cooking magazines, trade publications and posts from food and farm blogs, we've sought out a dizzying array of seed and plant sources over the years. Each of these small, independent businesses has something unique to offer. Here's a list of our favorites. A longtime favorite of ours with everything for the kitchen garden, from ethnic vegetables and herbs to flower seeds and plants, bulbs, mushroom kits, great garden supplies and a nice book selection. Seed packets are sized for the home gardener and are priced accordingly, with most packets priced $1.50 or less, so you can try a new variety for pocket change.
