How do quartz infrared heaters work? How efficient are they?

I'm wondering about the advisability of buying one of these heaters.

they are not advisable for ordinary home heating purposes. because they must radiate to function, they have a much higher fire potential than resistance type electric heaters.

IR heaters are good for drafty barns, garages and workshops. the radiation will warm the skin and clothing without having to provide the heat to warm the air. the effect is much like standing near a bonfire.

they need to be strategically placed because if your position is shadowed, you will cool quickly. Normally they are placed high, much like a lighting fixture, which is the opposite of normal heaters. Because they have no "thermostat" function, they should never be left unattended even in industrial settings. And they provide no benefit when no one is around to absorb the radiation.

Using Quartz Infrared Heaters In Older Homes

Any home can use quartz heaters if they choose to. Not all homes by far have central heating and air. Older homes especially must use alternative heating methods to keep them warm in the cold weather months. Some home owners simply can not afford to have a central unit installed because they can cost thousands of dollars for the unit itself and even more to have it put in. There is duct work to run and sometimes even electrical issues to be dealt with in order to put a central unit into an older house.

When a home does not have a central unit, the homeowner has to come up with other viable methods for heating. Some older homes might have a gas furnace. These can be expensive to use if you intend to keep your house warm enough to be really comfortable. Then there are those old fashioned electric wall heaters. Those things can really sky rocket your electric bill and they do not heat efficiently. When they get older, they can also be a very dangerous fire hazard. Many homes have caught on fire in the middle of the night when one of these older electric wall heaters shorts out and the wiring begins to burn.

Homes that do not have gas or electric wall heaters might rely on space heaters. These can be electric or use a fuel like kerosene. The electric space heaters are notorious for over heating or getting turn over and starting fires. When fuel using heaters are used, like with kerosene, the smell can be unbearable. There is also a risk for explosion as well. Another alternative heating source besides a central unit are fireplaces. Buying wood can be costly depending on where you live and they are a very messy way to heat. They too pose a fire risk when the fireplace is not maintained or used correctly.
