On Coffee Pots, the BBC and Loneliness
31.08.11
I even-handed spilled hot coffee on my left thigh. It really hurts . I accidentally snagged the line of the coffee pot and pulled it over the side of the kitchen counter. We have an old-fashioned stainless screw up one's courage to the sticking point percolator. I had just finished brewing the coffee, and it brews actually hot. The coffee pot hit my leg, and the hot coffee saturated my capris.
I tore them off and tried to get my thigh under the scullery faucet, but the water from the tap is sort of warm and I couldn’t get my thigh under there anyway, and splashing it didn’t actually do much.
In that moment of intense pain, I felt like I did in childbirth. Focused on upstanding one thing. A force beyond my control sweeping through my bulk like a wildfire.
Then struggling to think through the pain. And in a way, sensibility on my own. Feeling in a strange way alone .
I was alone in the house, so I was the only one who could do anything for myself, to think clearly or to apprehension. I wanted to protect myself. And I wanted my husband to protect me and conserve me and help me.
