Best coffee machines

We find it unworkable to keep focused on testing and writing about the latest technology without at least seven or eight sedulous espressos down the hatch. Until now, coffee has always been in the background at CNET UK, fuelling us with its caffeinated brilliance as we go about our day, but it's time we brought it to the fore to thank it for all its hard exertion.

We put five of the latest espresso machines to the ultimate test: a team of thirsty, caffeine-jonesing hacks. Are any of them are worth your every so often and money? Let's find out.

Nespresso Variations 2009 Espresso Capsules Review | Single Serve ...

Every year, Nespresso comes out with a new set of Variations, flavored espresso capsules, that while not for everyone, they are an appealing and fun way to play with your Nespresso machine and enjoy espresso with others who maybe aren't as into espresso as you are. This year, three Nespresso Variations showed up in early December at the Nespresso Club store and at their boutiques across the country. Chestnut Cream - "Reminiscent of very sweet and concentrated jarred chestnut cream, recalls the traditional "marron glace," or "candied chestnut." - says Nespresso. For me, I tried it as a straight espresso, and in a latte. The latte was a great way to enjoy the subtle flavors that do admittedly get a bit muted, but complement the cream flavor well. Americans might think of this a bit as a hazelnut cream type flavor, but it is a bit different. Straight, the flavor is intense, and sits on a nice medium dark roast that offers a bit of acidity for the flavors to play off of. I preferred it with a bit of sugar. I do have to call out that the aroma coming off this when it brewed was intoxicating. Apricot - "Reminiscent of a very fresh, ripe and juicy apricot; unlike the more intense dried apricot flavor." - Says Nespresso. They should have added "It will blow you away with the authentic flavor". This was my least favorite in concept and most favored in tasting. Total surprise. Again, I tried it straight and in a latte, and favored this one as a straight espresso with a bit of sugar. Again the sugar just lengthens the flavor profile enough to enjoy it. No need for over sweetness here, just a touch to bring it out. The flavor truly is like a fresh apricot, which is a great treat. The aroma is not as overwhelming when it brews as the Chestnut Cream, but the nose when drinking is just great. Don't let it sit around long, the aroma is great sooner than later. Pain d'Espice/Gingerbread - "Reminiscent of crystalized orange zest or peel, honey, cinnamon and ginger...

Nespresso – a profitable luxury coffee brand

In 1970, Nestlé’s Research and Development department invented the Nespresso capsule-based coffee pressurized coffee extraction system for consistent high-quality coffee brewing on a per cup basis. The first patent applications were filed in 1976 after considerable R&D and after further R&D the system was launched commercially in 1988. Since its launch, the system has experienced 25 % annual growth and there are now 1.6 million active affiliated Nespresso Club members.

In a world in which fidelity and convenience are the key metrics to the success or failure of a product, it would appear the obvious financial success of the Nespresso system can be attributed to both. With coffee consumption now moving from the business locale to that of the home, the Nespresso coffee machine sits proudly amongst polished steel gadgets in the kitchen. Whilst coffee elitists might prefer pulling their own espresso from a bulky semi-automatic machine, the urban dwelling coffee drinker on the go requires less fuss but just as much java. Key here is that Nespresso ticks both boxes, it reduces brewing time and produces a decent espresso which ought to rival that of most automatic coffee machines. At a purely functional level then it does just enough to service the needs of its consumers with little fuss.

At an emotive level the Nespresso brand is positioned as a luxury convenience brand, with George Clooney as an ambassadorial figure adorning much of Nespresso’s above the line marketing – a clear indication that the focus on positioning Nespresso as aspirational brand.  Nespresso’s communication suggest that it is sophisticated and charming (I shall assume like Clooney), able to pick the ambitious up and comer up from a hard day at work and just a little too expensive for the common man to indulge in.
