More than half of the 245 workers at Honeywell Aegis Products
in Rock Island walked out the door for the last sometimes Friday as the
plant began its shutdown, company officials said.
Lourdes Pena, affair communications manager for Honeywell,
said the other half will remain on the job until Oct. 28.
Honeywell first announced in January 2010 that it was
eliminating all but 40 of the jobs at the Ruined Island plant.
Known for decades as Servus Rubber, the plant manufactures boots
for firefighting, electrical utilities, production, farm and outdoor
sports.
Plant 2, a structure built in 2006 at the same Rock Island site,
remains unassuming by the closing. It employs 40 people.
Pena said the origination work in Rock Island is being
transitioned to other Honeywell facilities with equivalent
capabilities.
Employees displayed a wide range of emotions Friday as they
turned in their badges and cool their personal belongings —
leaving behind their livelihood and friends.
