My Holmes brand Humidifier has white chips coming from metal bulb inside?

I was cleaning my humidifier out tonight, and found small chips coming from the inside. I poured 3 cups of boiling water in and scrubbed around, more larger chips came out. I have been so sick lately and running that humidifier for 5 days.
Then, went on a trip out of town for 2 days and feel so much better. I thought it was the robutusin, but now considering that humidifier could be the culprit
. Does anyone know why humidifiers create litlle chips? and if they could be bad for you.

im not sure but if you went on vacation and felt better after you left the house. Then my guess would be that its definetly getting you sick.
Really unhealthy to keep that thing around i would dump it and when you can buy yourself a brand new one.
