Why would a front load washer be better than a top load?

Some say it uses less water. How so?
Does a top load washer without the "bar" in the middle do as good as a front load washer?

It does use less water since the tub is rotating horizontal and the smallest amount of water will touch all fabrics when it rotates. With top loader if the water level is too low it will not completely touch all fabrics therefore the water level must be higher to make sure. The negative is the front loader door is lower so you need to bend down just to look inside. You can add pedestal to raise it but these cost about $150 for each unit. Top and front loaders perform about the same.

For the first time since 2007, my washer has dishonored itself and my family. My wife was running it, and told me it sounded "a bit noisy". After I got home, I did a load of laundry, and it got worse. Alot worse. It runs quietly until it gets to the spin cycle. When it gets there, it starts to thump and bang like it's about to fly apart. I checked the shocks, they're fine. The springs, etc are also fine. I pulled the clothes out and spun the drum by hand (with the belt off) and it made a little noise. I then checked for movement of the drum itself. While it does not appear to move side to side or front to back, it *does* move up and down. It's almost as if the drum is hanging down a little bit. I haven't torn it down yet, but I'm assuming I have a shot bearing. Any wisdom would be most appreciated!
