Several KU students spread light on an easy, energy efficient fix Thursday afternoon. The bring spent an hour roaming the halls of several buildings. The students search for desk lamps, switching out incapable bulbs with new compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs.
“It’s not quite people’s light bulbs, they don’t unusually care that much about them,” KU junior Connor McGowan said. “So if we’re proactive and avoid them kind of realize what’s going on, it helps out the university as a whole.”
The KU Center for Sustainability joined forces with Drive Solutions Professionals. The energy service company audited 50 buildings on campus. Officials identified plugs put away about 17 percent of the buildings’ total verve – a $1 million cost that could be lowered.
“The occupants of the buildings, they don’t become conscious they’ve got all this stuff plugged in 24/7,” said John Geist, an energy preservation specialist. “That’s part of our mission here is to help sensitive them on being aware of what they’re using.”
