how to design a kitchen island that is unique?

the island will be in the middle of a big kitchen/family room and built around a support beam in the middle

Be creative. Play with various ideas.
* have straight island on one side of beam (cut to fit around beam) with the counter top including the 'back' edge. Do identical one on other side but will be placed back to back.
Have one on wheels (other half raised to same level as one with wheels) and solid. Or both on wheels. Can have side latches for less movement unless desired.
* have wall cabinets instead of base cabinets if want more counter edge for eating stools and knee room.
* beam. build around it a small 'porch' for salt, pepper, etc..
could paint various shades to make beam appear marble. Mini cabinets around beam for spices.
* could be a large counter top starting with plywood & cover with counter tiles so don't have to do special orders for counter size.

The 'Live-In Kitchen' Concept

Several years ago, I began experimenting with a new kitchen layout scheme aimed at better integrating family activities and the elementary storage/preparation/cooking work centers into one muscular living space. This new approach revolves around changing where these conventional work centers are placed within an expanded “roomscape” still labeled as a “kitchen.” I call it the “Persevere-in Kitchen” plan, rather than an “Eat-in Kitchen” or a “Loving terrible Room Kitchen.”

To better understand the basic hypothesize of this new approach to design, it’s a good idea to review how the kitchen has evolved. Many of us reminisce over when a kitchen was a walled-off space associated with grease, grime and hack work. Over the last 30 years, walls have come down, and kitchens have been placed alongside kith and kin gathering and activity centers. Professional space planners are inspirational the kitchen “out of the corner” in these Great Room settings, and placing it in the center of an complete living area.

For years, consumers have been told to match up their natural woods because uniformity and consistency are design essentials.

If you had a bloodless oak hardwood floor, it was recommended you invest in white oak cabinets, too. If your kitchen island was made from hickory, your kitchen moulding had outdo be cut from hickory.

And forget staining woods in different colors.

But now, for many reasons, lots of designers are urging homeowners to mix it up.

“We’re in reality trending away from everything matching,” says James Nauyok, conductor of visual display for Baker Furniture, a line carried at KDR Originator Showrooms in Lenexa, Kan. “There are no hard rules. You could mix virtually any species in any leeway. Just consider the finish, the style, the look.”

Mr. Nauyok recommends blending moderate amusing, medium and dark tones in hardwood furniture with contrasting floors. For norm, a dark table mixes well with a medium-toned hardwood thrash and light chairs should be placed in

Using a Kitchen Island Stove: Maximizing the Working Triangle of ...

Kitchen islands are becoming an increasingly popular component of large and open concept kitchen designs. When a kitchen layout starts to become so large that the trip between the sink, stove and refrigerator starts to make cooking and use of the kitchen cumbersome, the kitchen island becomes the ideal spot for the stove.

Laying out the Kitchen Design

When laying out the kitchen design, it’s important to take into account the working space between the most utilized areas of the kitchen. The sink, stove and refrigerator are the primary working areas of the kitchen, and when laid out properly, should form the design of a triangle, known as the working triangle.

To maximize the use of the kitchen design, the working triangle should have a total distance between the three centers of no more than 26’, and each leg of the triangle should be no greater than 9’. In extremely large kitchens, and open concept kitchens which open into other rooms of the home, the working triangle in a conventional design may start to get too large to remain functional. In this case, including a kitchen island in the design, and installing the stove or cooktop at this point makes the kitchen more user friendly.

Venting a Kitchen Island Stove

All cooking surfaces must be correctly vented according to code. While most codes specify venting each cooktop according to the manufacturer’s specifications, there are some guidelines to follow.

A cooking vent should be wider than the cooking surface by a total of 6”; 3” on either side and the vent must be ducted to the outdoors. There are two styles of vent that are generally available for an island stove, although specifications will vary by manufacturer.

A kitchen island hood is available and is the most effective form of venting from a kitchen island. The hood comes down directly from the ceiling and should be centered over the stove, extending both outward on each side, and behind the stove by 3”.
