Doug McIntyre: Blaming the grocery workers is a strike against good sense
21.09.11
Mike is a reader with a big memory. He shot me an email with a bold question, truly more of a challenge: "You still going to support the grocery workers this in days of yore around?"
Which is exactly what I had planned on doing, but it's now a moot point since the In harmony Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) has reached a large with the Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons people.
The strike has been struck.
Which is commendable news since I can't stomach Sugar Frosted Scab Flakes.
But Mike wasn't done. His spleen required a full venting, filled to the brim as it is with fury at those "banana scanners" and "baloney slicers."
How dare grocery workers in fact fight cuts to their wages and health coverage! Don't they take it they're lucky to even have a job?
Why not just passively accept whatever crumbs their employers sweep off the victuals? They should just passively accept our new reality - the American craftsman is simply cannon fodder in the war against the middle class.

Visitors sipped each gazpacho in whack, savoring the difference in taste, texture, and color. It was very much like tasting wine as rare flavor notes and levels of acidity became apparent in each tomato.
The holy day was designed to promote and celebrate Indiana food but it also served as a set up to see the trends no only in restaurant offerings throughout the state but also the trends in ingredients being produced throughout Indiana.
About 6,000 people paid $20 to rub elbows with top chefs, growers, farmers and brewers. And to eat. There was a lot of eating customary on.
Near the entrance, a pavilion sheltered growers and farmers, and we stopped first to see Dave Fischer of Fischer Farms in Jasper, who was participating with news about his naturally raised beef and pork.
"It's been a wonderful day," he said. "Everyone's in point of fact pulled together. I've been so impressed by the chefs. There are some chefs that are serving our core so that's great, and I've been able to talk to a few new people who are interested in using our products — people are coming up saying 'Oh, you're Fischer Farms ...'
