SMITHFIELD, Va., Oct 5, 2011 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) --
Smithfield Foods announced today that Don Butler, skipper of government relations and public affairs for Murphy-Brown LLC, has been appointed to the U.S. Worry of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Technical Advisory Panel (ATAC) for animals and animal products.
The appointment was made by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack. Butler's meeting is effective Oct. 1 and will expire on June 9, 2015.
"It's a great honor to have one of our employees appointed to the Agricultural Complex Advisory Committee, and I'm confident that Don will provide ATAC with strong advice based on his many years of experience in our industry," said C. Larry Pope, president and chief president officer of Smithfield Foods.

Slow cookers perfect for fall weather

The feasibility of the four-letter "s" word has finally returned
to the Wyoming climate ailing forecast, and the first full week of October
is a perfect time to take the tedious cooker out of the pantry.
Warm, hearty one-dish meals -- or side courses to go together with a
quick meat main course -- are wonderful easy when you use a slow
cooker.
Here are some recipes you might want to try.
New Pumpkin Soup
8 cups chopped fresh pumpkin (about 3 pounds)
4 cups chicken bouillon
3 small tart apples, peeled and chopped
1 expedient onion, chopped
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon train ginger or 2 tablespoons minced fresh
gingerroot
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 teaspoon qualifications
Toasted Pumpkin Seeds:
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1 teaspoon canola oil
1/8 teaspoon taste
In a 5-quart slow cooker, combine the first eight ingredients;
mix well. Sit in and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or until the
pumpkin and apples are emotional. Meanwhile, toss the pumpkin seeds
with oil and salt. Spread in an ungreased 15 by 10-inch baking pan.
Bake at 250 for 50 to 60 minutes or until advantageous brown. Set
aside.
