Watersedge Festival: Counting Days Until Next Year
Although thunder-shower closed the Watersedge Fall Festival on Friday, Saturday was the absolute fall fair day with blue skies, mild temperatures and most importantly, no dogs. My entire family met at my house and followed the music of the Red Eye Express through the Real Homes Park to the festival, held at the Watersedge Community Center.
My children, Shawn, 8, and Madison, 6, who were darned disappointed when the festival had to be rescheduled from early September until this weekend, were so stimulated to jump on the carnival rides that the first thing we did was redeem our passes for all-day humbug bracelets.
These passes, sold by the Watersedge Rec Council, saved us $8 each on the all-day participation. Also, unlike some other local fairs, there is no charge at the gate, allowing us to pass more money on games, food and attractions.
After the kids flew down the wonderful slide three times and rode the swings twice, it was tempo to visit the dunk booth.

Two things are of paramount importance to the people of Sierra Leone right now. They include getting the youth (the source of hope) actively involved in development efforts and being self reliant, thereby addressing the issue of youth unemployment and vulnerability, and making food accessible to the urban population who form the bulk of society, thereby effectively addressing the issue of food security.
Sierra Leone went through a decade-long bloody civil war that saw a good percentage of its youth population becoming either perpetrators or victims of despicable human rights abuses, with untold thousands forced to flee the conflict and wind up as internally displaced persons in their own country.
Most of them are yet to fully recover from the shock caused by the excruciating experiences they went through during the war, and long to be given the opportunity to return to and be reintegrated into their own rural communities to regain their livelihoods and their lives as farmers.
The Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programme implemented by the Government of Sierra Leone just after the war helped bring about immediate peace in the nation, but stopped short of rehabilitating the youth who were displaced during the war, especially those from farming communities in the east and north of the country.
Nor was it able to deal with the huge numbers of youth who not only fled their communities during the conflict, but lost their parents as well and have been in displacement ever since, without employment, enough formal education to satisfy potential employers, without income or homes to call their own.
